It is a high-precision welding platform made of alloy steel and subjected to nitriding heat treatment process to significantly improve surface hardness and wear resistance.
Material: Why steel instead of cast iron?
The vast majority of high-precision 3D welding platforms on the market are made of high-strength gray cast iron (such as HT250 or HT300). Cast iron offers the following advantages:
Excellent wear resistance: Its natural graphite structure provides self-lubrication.
Strong vibration damping: It effectively absorbs welding vibrations.
Relatively low cost.
Excellent casting properties: It easily accommodates large platforms with complex structures.
Steel platforms are typically made of medium-carbon quenched and tempered alloy steel. The key reason for choosing steel is nitriding. Compared to cast iron, steel offers:
Higher toughness: It is more impact-resistant and less prone to breakage or chipping.
Suitable for deep nitriding: This is a crucial aspect; cast iron is not suitable for deep surface nitriding.
Process: What is Nitriding?
Nitriding is a surface heat treatment process that infiltrates nitrogen atoms into the steel surface, forming an extremely hard, wear-resistant, and corrosion-resistant nitride layer.
How it works: A steel workpiece is placed in a sealed furnace filled with a nitrogen-containing medium (such as ammonia), heated to a certain temperature (usually 500-580°C), and held at this temperature for a period of time, allowing the nitrogen atoms to diffuse and penetrate the workpiece surface.
Key Results:
Extremely High Surface Hardness: The surface hardness after nitriding can reach HV 900-1200 (approximately HRC 65-72 or higher), significantly higher than the hardness of ordinary cast iron platforms (approximately HRC 40-55). This is its most significant advantage.
Excellent Wear Resistance: This extremely high hardness directly results in unparalleled wear resistance. Frequent insertion and removal of locating pins and accessories, as well as the dragging of the workpiece, causes virtually no wear to the platform hole walls and working surface.
High Corrosion Resistance: The nitrided layer offers excellent resistance to atmospheric, water, and steam corrosion.
Minimal Deformation: The nitriding treatment temperature is below the steel's phase transition temperature, and the entire process is slow, resulting in minimal workpiece deformation, which is crucial for welding platforms requiring extremely high flatness
